Background: Dental caries remains one of the most common chronic childhood diseases worldwide. Poor dietary habits and inadequate oral hygiene contribute to its high prevalence. This study was conducted to examine the frequency of dental caries in children aged 4–12 years attending the pediatric ward of KMU-IDS, Kohat.
Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted on 257 children aged 4–12 years. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire from children or their parents regarding dietary habits and brushing practices. Clinical examination was performed to assess the presence of dental caries, with specific attention to tooth involvement.
Results: Of the 257 children examined, 130 (50.6%) were boys and 127 (49.4%) were girls. Dental caries was present in 53.5% (135) of the study population, with the highest prevalence observed in children aged 7–9 years (47.9%). Tooth D was the most frequently affected tooth among the 4–12-year age group.
Conclusion: This study highlights a high prevalence of dental caries among children in KMU-IDS, Kohat, particularly in the 7–9-year age group. Tooth D was identified as the most commonly affected tooth. These findings emphasize the urgent need for improved oral health education, preventive measures, and better access to pediatric dental care.
